Dinner and A Movie: Final

Childhood Disarray

Digital Image, Rechargeable Light, Drink Coasters, Plastic Eggs, Miniature Teacup Set, Stuffed Bear, Puzzle Cube

Inspired by the movie: Close (2022)

The photograph reflects the intense themes of relationship and complication between two young boys and the dynamic of their close friendship in their youth until it goes terribly wrong. I carefully selected and arranged objects to depict a sense of relationship and complication. The bear speaks to the warmth the boys have for one another. The plastic eggs were highlighted to convey restrictions surrounding their friendship and the puzzle cube to emphasize complication. There are also two cup coasters, to further portray the notion of two beings having been in the room previously. The miniature teacup set is to convey the feeling of childhood as well as having a small stature in the film. The rechargeable light had been placed as a common item in a childhood bedroom to "ward off dangers" which can be considered irony as danger does inevitably arrive.

Reflection Statement
The three sculptures visually communicate three separate scenes, all connecting through movement and visual power. While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on the visual appeal of each sculpture because the overall presence alone as well as a collection was the most important to me. I decided to include the balsa wood and drill because I had not had previous access to them for artwork. I felt the work was lacking subject matter, so I initiated the repetitive linework expressed throughout each sculpture. I want to keep exploring my personal motif as it shows up in each piece of work. I want to learn more about the various types of wood I am capable of using as it opens up the door for new opportunities. This piece allowed me to explore some materials that I had no experience with and have the power to tie in the experience with materials I previously knew of. The making of this work exposed new ideas such as meticulous detailing and purposeful line making.
